Sustainability Committee is developing an AI-powered SDG Research Assessment Tool to better identify, track, and strengthen the visibility of research contributing to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Research performance related to the SDGs is an important component of THE Impact Ratings and QS Sustainability Rankings, in which VinUni currently participates. At present, approximately 44% of VinUni’s publications are identified as SDG-related through Elsevier’s SDG mapping methodology. However, internal analysis and comparison with alternative approaches suggest that the potential proportion could be significantly higher, potentially reaching 80 - 90%. This gap indicates that some research with meaningful sustainability relevance may not currently be fully identified or captured. The SDG Research Assessment Tool is designed to help address this gap. Faculty and researchers can enter the title, abstract, and keywords of their research, and the AI-powered tool will analyze the content to identify the most relevant SDGs, explain the connection between the research and each identified SDG, and suggest relevant keywords or areas for consideration where SDG relevance may not be clearly captured. Beyond supporting individual researchers, the tool will enable VinUni to systematically identify and track SDG-related research across the University, build a stronger evidence base for sustainability reporting, and improve the visibility and recognition of VinUni’s research contributions to sustainable development.
